  • The formative years of Cuban national hero José Julián Martí Pérez are explored in Fernando Pérez’s handsome historical epic, MARTÍ, THE EYE OF THE CANARY (Marti, el ojo del canario), directed by Fernando Pérez. Set during 1860s Havana, the film follows “El Apóstol” from the age of 9 to 17, as he experiences firsthand the often brutal inequalities of Spanish colonial rule, and charts the changing spiritual tide and dawning political consciousness within him. Gusman Center for the Performing Arts at 7:00 p.m.

  • U.S. premiere of INTIMATE GRAMMER (Hadikduk Hapnimi), directed by Nir Bergman at Regal South Beach at 9:14 p.m. Set in the 1960s, at the dawn of Israel’s birth, Aharon, a first generation Israeli boy living in a Jerusalem apartment complex, must work out who he is amid the turmoil and confusion of a community and an entire nation struggling to define themselves.
    Pre-reception at the Catalina Hotel (1732 Collins Avenue) from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm. Nir Bergman (Director) and Orly Zilbershatz (Actor) will present at reception and screening for intro and Q&A.

  • IF A TREE FALLS: A STORY ABOUT THE EARTH LIBERATION FRONT will screen Regal South Beach at 10 p.m. The Earth Liberation Front (ELF) emerged in the 1990s as a secret collective of individuals dedicated to sabotaging companies they blamed for environmental destruction. After perpetrating arson and pervasive property damage, the ELF was targeted by the U.S. government for domestic terrorism. Director Marshall Curry (from Oscar-nominated Street Fight) will be present for intro and Q&A.

  • The U.S. Festival premiere of THE INVISIBLE EYE (La mirada invisible) will screen at the Tower Theater at 9:30 p.m. as a co-presentation of The Global Film Initiative. The final crumbling months of the Galtieri dictatorship, circa 1982, loom over this tale of power, corruption and voyeurism in Buenos Aires’ Colegio Nacional. Marita, a stern teaching assistant, is obsessed with rules and order… and pleasing her boss. Director Diego Lerman will be present for intro and Q&A.
