a film by Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore, Tony Danza, Channing Tatum, Anne Hathaway
USA | 90 min. | comedy | trailer
In between his big-budget Hollywood studio gigs on films like Inception, The Dark Knight Rises and Lincoln, actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt has pulled together a consistently impressive body of interesting work on independent low-budget films such as Brick, (500) Days of Summer, and 50/50. Now Gordon-Levitt has written and directed his own independent film, Don Jon, and the result proves his choices as an actor (and now as a writer/director) are those of a spirited artist who brings a unique, fresh sensibility to American film.
In Don Jon, Gordon-Levitt himself plays Jon Martello, a Jersey Shore-type who confidently handles the field of women on the singles scene but soon finds himself in a familiar romantic bind when he falls for the gorgeous, monogamy-demanding Barbara Sugarman (Scarlett Johansson). With such a catch, it’s easy for Jon to give up his one-night stands with other women. The gutsy and startling twist in Gordon-Levitt’s movie is what Jon finds he cannot possibly give up: his secret love of online porn! As a statement on the cultural and psychological impact of the digital age on the human condition, Don Jon makes a provocative conversation-starter.
In supporting roles, it’s fantastic to see Tony Danza liven things up as Jon’s father; and Julianne Moore as a fellow student in Jon’s night classes, with whom Jon finds it refreshingly easy to be honest. And Channing Tatum and Anne Hathaway have hilarious cameos! - Jaie Laplante
