HAVANA… A TOURIST’S PLAYGROUND… FAR FROM PARADISE
a film by Lucy Mulloy
Cast: Dariel Arrechaga, Anailín de la Rúa de la Torre, Javier Núñez Florián
USA | 90 min. | trailer
What fuels Havana’s new generation, just now coming of age? British director Lucy Mulloy spent years in Havana researching and writing her debut feature film, and the result is Una Noche. Best friends Raul (Dariel Arrechaga) and Elio (Javier Núñez Florián) work in the kitchen of a hotel that caters to European tourists, and aren’t treated or paid very well. While Raul hustles medication from a hospital for his HIV+ mother, he comes home to find her prostituting herself again, and an ensuing accident creates a serious injury.
Punishment from Havana authorities will be atrocious for injuring a foreigner, and Raul hides in the shadows. What does a young man, bristling with energy and passion, do in such a desperate situation? His inchoate dreams of leaving Havana for Miami, where the father who abandoned him years before may or may not live, suddenly become an urgent need.
To make the 90-mile journey with him, Raul recruits Elio, who has his own desperate reasons for not wanting to leave Raul’s side, and soon Elio’s twin sister Lila (Anailín de la Rúa de la Torre) joins the teenage wannabe-rafters when she stumbles upon the secret plot. Mulloy’s clear-minded script and lens capture the single-minded focus of a youth in a time and place who can afford only one dream at a time - barely.
