Following their immensely successful debut film Little Miss Sunshine, Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris return to direct a clever new film Ruby Sparks.
Calvin (Paul Dano) is a young writer who achieved phenomenal success in his career but is now struggling with his writing – and with his personal life. He has writer's block, a non-existent love life, and absolutely no friends, besides his dog, his therapist (Elliot Gould) and his brother Harry (Chris Messina).
Finally, he makes a breakthrough in his novel and creates a character named Ruby (Zoe Kazan), modeling her after his ideal woman. As Calvin continues to write about Ruby, he finds himself falling in love with her. But when he wakes up one morning to find Ruby sitting on his couch, Calvin realizes that his work of fiction has turned into a living, breathing person.
Calvin confides in Harry to prove his creation by demonstrating how he can change and manipulate her with his written words. However, his fear of losing Ruby becomes her downfall as Calvin fights for control over her in his writing, and learns that he can't always make her behave the way he wants or needs her to.
"Ruby Sparks in a winning, charming yet bittersweet exploration of love and relationships, those that exist both in reality and fantasy." – Katie Walsh, IndieWire
