ROBOT & FRANK
Directed by Jake Schreier
USA | 2012 | comedy, drama, sci-fi | trailer
Cast: Frank Langella, James Marsden, Liv Tyler, Susan Sarandon
Winner of the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize at Sundance Film Festival, Robot & Frank is a fantastically original mash-up of various influences. It’s Ocean’s Eleven meets Away With Her meets Wall-E !
Set in a near future that very closely resembles our present, Oscar-nominee Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon, Starting Out in the Evening) plays lone wolf Frank, a retired jewel thief who may or may not be experiencing the beginnings of Alzheimer’s. Frank’s adult children, Madison (Liv Tyler) and Hunter (James Marsden), are worried that might be the case, and Hunter brings Frank a state-of-the-art automated caregiver, which Frank doesn’t want. That is, until he realizes the Robot might come in handy as a sidekick in the pursuit of the things that make Frank feel young again - beautiful women and snatching shiny jewels from right under the noses of his well-to-do neighbors. Frank has the hots for the local librarian, played by Susan Sarandon at her earthy best.
What Frank doesn’t see is that after years on the emotional lam, he’s finally forming an attachment to another being - but in a twisted irony, to an inhuman robot that doesn’t have the cuddly, Disney-inspired personality that Frank initially thinks it does. Ultimately, technology cannot protect Frank from a reality that begins to close in around him, in equally comic and cruel measures.
Feature film debut by Jake Schreier, a graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
